Oregon Basin

Oregon Basin stands as a testament to Cody's early development, blending history, geography, and natural resources into a captivating landscape. Rumor has it, the basin earned its name from a weak bull who was behind during a cattle drive from Oregon to Wyoming, symbolizing the region's rich heritage. Despite early attempts at irrigation and urban development, such plans were thwarted by the economic downturn of 1907, leading to the establishment of Cody in a different location.

As one of Wyoming's largest producing oil fields, Oregon Basin's anticline is a treasure trove of natural wealth, its resources still being extracted today. Yet, beyond its economic significance, the basin harbors a diverse array of prairie wildlife, echoing the ancient rhythms of the land when it was home to indigenous peoples.

Beyond its economic and historical importance, Oregon Basin also holds cultural treasures in the form of Native American petroglyphs, revealing glimpses of ancient lives etched into the rock. Discovered by Smithsonian Institute River Basin Surveyors in 1947, these petroglyphs offer a window into the past, enriching the landscape with layers of human history.

For adventurers seeking to explore the intersection of history, geography, and culture, Oregon Basin beckons with its scenic UTV drives, promising an immersive journey through time and terrain.

Kirwin Ghost Town

IMG_4784.HEIC

Nestled alongside the Wood River, Kirwin whispers tales of a bygone era when it thrived as a gold mining town. Gold once flowed from its veins, fueling dreams of prosperity and growth among its nearly 200 residents. As the gold reserves dwindled, so too did the town's population, as people sought greener pastures elsewhere for livelihoods and opportunities. The early 1900s brought a tragic reminder of nature's unpredictability, as an avalanche descended from the hills above, claiming lives and leaving buildings in ruin. This calamity hastened the exodus of residents, leaving Kirwin to the mercy of time and the elements.

Today, Kirwin stands as a haunting testament to its past, a ghost town frozen in time amid the rugged beauty of Wyoming's mountains. Nature has reclaimed its domain, blanketing the landscape with lush vegetation and providing refuge to the wildlife that now call this place home. Kirwin's abandoned structures, though weathered by time, remain open and beckon curious souls to explore and unravel the mysteries of this forgotten town.

Located just 40 miles southwest of Meeteetse, Kirwin offers a reminder of the ebb and flow of human endeavor against the backdrop of Wyoming's stunning mountainous terrain. As you stand amidst the remains of Kirwin, you'll find yourself transported to a time long past, where the echoes of history whisper tales of resilience, hardship, and the enduring spirit of the American West. *Please note, this trail is too far to drive from our location with the machine.
